Renault Supercinq : “More five than the 5 !"
Today, numbers of Supercinq are still on our roads returning many services to thousands motorists. However, Supercinq is not that young… It appeared in October 1984, but its history started quite earlier. Indeed, in spring 1978 the "140 project" is launched. This project will have the heavy spot to replace the popular Renault 5, launched six years earlier, and always at the head of the sales of cars in France. But like the genesis a vehicle is always long, Renault harnesses with this project quickly. |
The schedule of conditions will impose precise instructions: future Renault 5 must preserve plastic shields. Moreover, the shape of the bumper must be higher avoid damage the painting of the trunk. They are prototypes of VBG (bottom-of-the-range vehicle) which will be used as a basis for project 140. Many models will be realized, but tests with customers, void the proposals. Image of Renault 5 is so strong that it swept all the projects. Thus project 140 will give birth to the greatest number of models to scale 1 of all history of the "Régie". The project became that expensive, that it goes to bring Bernard Hanon, the chairman of Renault, to call Marcello Gandini. |
Gandini is the man of the moment: He designed the Lamborghini Countach. The project of Gandini was a logical solution: to modernize the lines of Renault 5. In September 1984, Supercinq is ready. The body was completely new, but thus proposed the same profile. The greatest structural change was the transverse placement of the engine, taken again directly of Renault 9 and 11 (Alliance / Encore). On the other hand, the suspension called upon the less sophisticated design of the shock absorbers Mac Pherson (inspiration of the Volkswagen Golf (Rabbit).

October
1984, Supercinq is presented to the public at the Auto Show of
Paris. It is, initially, only available in body three doors. As of its
launching, Renault Supercinq must face a serious rival: Peugeot 205. Each one
seeking to obtain the first place on the French market.
|
February
1985, Renault Supercinq is proposed in a sportive variation: the GT Turbo,
motorized by a turbo-compressed 1,4l of 115 then 120ch
|
. |
To
reinforce its range, Supercinq will be available seven months after its
launching, in 5 doors. The characteristic of this version: it is longer than 3 doors version (+ 6 cm). Renault Supercinq 5 doors
measures 3,65 meters compared with 3,59 meters for the 3 doors. This is one year after its launching (in November 1985), that Renault Supercinq is
declined in motorizations diesel (versions TD and GTD).
|
In
April 1987, an entry line appears the Supercinq, “Five”. One
of the most known and sold versions. This version “Five” will be in Supercinq
what the “Junior” was in Peugeot 205. Supercinq will be, throughout its career,
declined in a multitude of special series: Schuss, NRJ, Spring" (in 1988), "Tiga",
"Blue Jean", "coup de Coeur" (in 1989),…
|
Two
alternatives convertible were even produced: a first by the Belgian
EBS, then, a second by the French HEULIEZ in 1989,
named “Belle Ile".
|
In
June 1990, Supercinq was replaced by Renault Clio. At this time, it was however
always the car most sold in France in front of Peugeot 205. Supercinq will be
then represented only by bottom-of-the-range versions not to make shade to
Clio.
|
As
from 1991, the sales decreased logically considerably, but it still remained of
many years available to the catalogue. In 1996 the series “Bye-Bye” made its
appearance. Like its name, it indicated, it was a kind of fighting honor of
the small smiling car. It was limited to 2000 specimens, into 3 or 5 doors. Its
slogan was rather commemorative: “This is not every day that you can
acquire a new collectible car” and Renault Supercinq left the scene in 1997,
after thirteen years of good and faithful services.
